IN BURNING HOUSE '
BULLET IN HEAD
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
; •: MASTERTON, This. Day.' Unusual circumstances stifround the .death of Alfred Thomas, aged 72 years, residing alone in a cottage in Princess street, Martinborouglq who was found dead with a bullet in his head.. A verdict that the wound was self-inflicted was returned at- the inquest-. i. Two men passing noticed smoko issuing'from Thomas’s cottage. All the doors were locked. On entering they found one of the rooms on fire and Thomas lying dead.- Moving the body a .32 calibre, revolver was found under it.
Tlie police are of opinion that before shooting himself Thomas must have set a lighted candle on the-floor. *No suspicion of-foul play is hold by the police. An explanation of the fact that the revolver was found under the body is that he shot himself standing up, dropped the guii, and fell forward on to it. • This theory is supported by the upward path of the bullet in the skull and the singeing bn his moustache, indicating that be shot was fired at close quarters.
