A MAORI CHIEFTAINESS

110 YEARS OLD

WANGANUI, This Day. The death occurred of the Miaori chieftainess Pirihira Peina, aged 110, years, at- Kai Iwi, near Wanganui. She had' witnessed all phases of the Maori wars on the Coast. Her father was chief of his tribe and fought with loyal natives for the Government during the Maori wars. Ho was well-known on the Coast. There were a number of children, all of whom are dead, hut many grandchildren and great grandchild rep survive. -.

DEATH OF AN ASHBURTON

RESIDENT

ASHBURTON, 3rd August. Mrs Sarah Ann Trezise died in her 102nd year. She was born at Croydon, near London, on 29th October, 1829, and at the age of 25 married Alfred Blackburn. Nine years later they came to New Zealand and settled in Christchurch. Mr Blackburn was .appointed stationmasler at Templeton in 1866, later being transferred to Rakaia, where they remained 18 years. Mr Blackburn retired in 1893 and died in 1906. His widow married John Trezise in 1909, and the latter died in 1911. Mrs Trezise leaves two daughters, three sons, 17 grandchildren, arid over 24 greatgrandchildren. She retained her faculties till the last. -
