LEFT OF CENTRE LINE
MOTORIST CONVICTED ACCIDENT ON MOUTERE HILL Before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon Theodore F. Kelling was charged with dangerous driving. Senior-Sergt. Quinn conducted the prosecution and Mr S. Moynagh appeared for the defendant. The charge arose out of an accident on the Moutere Hill when a car driven by the defendant came into collision with a car being driven in the opposite direction by Clarence A. White, l of Nelson. _ 'v After hearing White’s evidence to the effect that the defendant was on his wrong side when he rounded the corner where the accident occurred the Magistrate said that the charge should be amended to deal with the specific offence, created hv the Motor Regulations, of failing 'to keep his vehicle to the left of the centre line of the road, etc. The information was amended accordingly. . Continuing his evidence White said that the defendant when he came round the corner tried to pull over on to his correct side of the road and at the same time put on his brakes. The car skidded Wind sideways and witness could not avoid colliding with its rear wheels. After hearing further evidence to the effect that the defendant could have kept his vehicle to the left of the centre line on that particular corner His Worship inflicted a fine of 40s, with costs 10s. The defendant, who had originally pleaded not guilty, withdrew it and pleaded guilty after the evidence had been given.
