BRIDGE ACROSS AUCKLAND HARBOUR
REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE
HIGHWAYS BOARD’S REPLY (By Telegraph—Special to “The Mail”) AUCKLAND, This Day. Little hope of financial assistance for the proposed harbour bridge was given members of the Harbour Bridge Association who waited on the Alain Highways Board yesterday morning tef enlist the board’s sympathy with the scheme. The cliairman, Mr A. E. •lull, said: “It would be idle for me to pretend that the board can take into consideration the construction of this bridge within the next few years in view of our commitments in both the North and South Islands. I suggest that you secure the co-operation of the 200,C00 people on the city side of the harbour and show the hoard that the bridge is necessary. I can tell you that for the next few years the board cannot take into consideration the expenditure of such a sum. It cannot be done in 1929.”
Air E. Aldredge (Alavor of Devonpert): “Well, make it 1930.” Air Jull: “Alake it 1939 if vog like. (Laughter). We have our commitments for a considerable time ahead.”
