LONDON, Ist November. The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Mail” says that two of the most famous war-time aces, Captain Rene Fonekjwho shot down 75 German planes) and Ernest Udet (the . German pilot who brought down 62 Allied machines), have become very close friends, and shook hands heartily oil their first meeting for ten years. Formerly, they had only met in the air.
Fonck explained to Udet how lie shot down the German, Rumet, who had brought down 42 machines of the Allies. He also recalled bringing down six Germans in one day. Udet explained his tactics, saying, “I used to wait for dusk, and then, Hying at a height of between 15,000 and 18,000 feet, penetrate several* miles behind the Allied lines. I would turn my tail to the setting sun to await the return of your bombers and scouts!”
