THE NEW GOLF BALL

(From Our Own Oorrespoudont.)

LONDON, 271 h September. When iMr Norman Boa.se, the representative of St. Andrew’s golf championship committer, returned from America, be stated that it was not likely that anv derision would be arrived at in regard lo a new ball for three or four months. This was a '/tile surprising, as it was understood that the proposal to introduce a lighter and larger ball would he made at the annual meeting of the Royal and Ancient Club.

It seems, however, that there lias been a hitch in the, arrangements and at the request of the American authorities the question has been deferred. Thu Americans are as convinced as ever of the need for a modified hall —one that will take a good slice off the length which can be attained at present; hut they are not satisfied that (he new proposed ball will achieve this purpose. Under ordinary conditions the loss of length would not he more than from ten to fifteen yards. That in two full shots would be substantial, hut the Americans, it is understood, would prefer the restriction to he more drastic. On the face of it it may seem as if SI. Andrews are trying to force a new hall on the golfing world, but this is far from the case. They would prefer to let the present ball remain, and the proposal they made was really in the nature of a compromise. As lias been stated the Americans are not prepared to accept this. But delay may be fatal. The members of tho It. and A., who act oil behalf of players generally, refused four years ago to sanction much the same ball as is now suggested and, whilst they might now adopt it to satisfy American interests, there is no likelihood of their going beyond certain well defined limits.
