DOG IN THE MANGER

AMERICA AND EUROPEAN PROBLEMS

SOME POINTED REMARKS

BY LORD 'MELCHETT

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright Australian Press Association.—United Service.

NEW YORK, 25th October. Lord .Melchett, at a conference of major industries, asserted that England hail no desire to reopen the debt question with the United States, and asked America, if it wishes to take no part in the settlement of the German reparations problem, "at least not to get in the way." He said : "Our difficulties in Europe are great enough, but we feel we are competent to deal with European problems. Whenever an attempt is made in Europe to come together, we are always greeted with suspicion and hostility on the part of people on this side of the ocean, who attribute to us all kinds of motives which never enter our heads."
