EARLY NELSON
(To theniditor)
Sir, —The article entitled “Early Nelson” appearing in your recent issue will surely command more than passing attention.
It serves to elevate towards notico and at tho same time, pays tribute, to the morhory Of a group of worthy Nelson pioneers, who after bearing the heat and burden of those distinctive times they belonged to, now repose peacefully in the old cemetery in Collingwood street. The very natural and special fascination that attaches to all concerning the lives and experiences of those that “blazed the _trail’’ centres round an article of this kind, as it lifts the veil from the. past of thoso surroundings arid portrays tho simpler and rigorous conditions under which, the people lived in those days, who aided to shape the destinies of Nelson and not a little also of the Domiiiiofb beyond. As the subject, in this case is dealt with by the writer, it is rendered Iho more noteworthy from the fact that the material presented is plainly the fruits of much personal knowledge and investigation, and of the nature of historic reminiscences of this region, therefore valuable and well to go on record and not allowed to enter into the limbo of forgetfulness. Just as it is deemed permissible to add that future contributions framed along these .lines will be equally welcome and read with avidity by all interested in the foundation days of the settlement, the personalities and deeds of those identified therewith, whoso memory grows increasingly venerated for their courage, resourceful powers and endeavours.—l am. etc., READER, Nelson, 6th August. . -
