ARREST IN SYDNEY

AN EXCITING POLICE CHASE The detection c-f-a, counterfeit: florinby a tobacconist at Burwcixl, Sydney, last week, resulted in. the arrest of ayrian in whose possession the police - found nineteen other spurious coins. A man eritered a tobacconist’s sho-p, and after purchasing a packet' of cigarettes, tendered a two-shilhng piece. The tohacconisf, noticed that the coin was particularly bright, and took the precaution pf testing it by dropping it on the counter. There was just the slightest suspicion in Iris mind that the' coin did not “ring” as itwshould, and noticing a constable passing the doorway at the time he called the officer into the shop. The,, customer .was arrested .on suspicion by the constable. 'Another constable took the suspect, to the station and experienced no difficulty with Iris prisoner until - the gate of the station was reached. The man suddenly wrenched his arm free and made off. After calling for assistance the constable feet off in pursuit. Another constable joined in the chase, and after the man had been pursued along different streets for a distance of more than half.R-miie, lie was overtaken and rearrested. After he had been taken to the police station the. man was. searched, and 19 additional, counterfeit florins were found in his possession.* He was charged with uttering a spurious coin. The police closely questioned the niari concerning the coins and the possibility of other persons being concerned, in the fraud. The, man refused to give ariy address, stating that lie lived “anywhere.” He said that he was working alone in disposing of the counterfeits, and that lie had made them. >'
