lOSS OF .5181 IN NINE MONTHS IMMIGRATION ALSO REDUCED Tho provaVeneo of a measure of economic depression and of unemployment in Now Zealand! has caused a, considerable increase in the number of persons leaving the Dominion permanently. Tho number of "permanent residents" who lia'vo departed during the first nine" months of: this year is 3181, which is more than in the whole of any recent year. Owmg-to tho restrictions imposed by tho Government ou the volume of assisted immigration, the number of arrivals intending permanent vesideneo has been substantially reduced. Following is a summary of permanent migration for the first nine months of this and preceding j years:— • ' •
Not gain 7,790 10,469 10,942 5,679 The net gain by migration in tho whole of 1926 was , 15,287, immigrants numbering 17,868 arid emigrants 2581. The exodus in recent months has been chiefly,to Australia, which was the. destination of 2116 persons. Of the others, 594 left for the British Isles, 285 for other British possessions, 105 for the United States, and 81 for other foreign countries. The outward movement has continued throughout the year, the largest number in any month being recorded in September. Details are as follow, tho number of permanent immigrants being given in parentheses: January, 216 (1882); February 198 (1031); March, 339 (1642); April. 449 (646); May, 371 H 368); Juno, 354 (645); July, 'l3B (599); August, 349 (445); Soptember, 467 (602).
