THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT
SAMOA AMENDMENT BILL ALL NIGHT SITTING (By'Telegraph) (From "The Mail's" Parliamentary Reporter). WELLINGTON, 27th July. It was daylight this morning when the House finally dealt with the Samoa Amendment Bill. The House went into committee on the Bill shortly before 5 o'clock yesterday evening and the Opposition, staunchly supported by Mr Lysnar set up a fierce attack on the motion, that the short title stand as part of the Bill, the deportation issue being a chief ground of objection.
The arguments traversed in full on the second reading were repeated ad lib but at 2.55 a.m. the short title was agreed
Amendments to various clauses were subsequently proposed, principally with the idea of affording suspected persons a right of trial before deportation; but these were all defeated by large majorities.
.Speaking on the third reading-, the Hon. Sir Maui Pomare urged that- care should be taken to woo the Samoaiis so» that when the time came for them to stand on their own feet they would elect to become part of the British Empire. Care should be taken to see that not one drop of Samoan blood was shed. He criticised banishments and paid they were causing dissatisfaction but he "felt sure the present troubles would be remedied.
The Bill was passed at. 7.15 when the House rose.
