PENNY POSTAGE

DEFENDED BY SIR JOSEPH WARD

(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association)

MELBOURNE, Bth June. Referring to the remarks of Mr Gibson, Federal Postmaster-General, on the subject of penny postage, Sir Joseph Ward said the fear Mr Gibson expressed that the return to penny postage would mean a reduction of revenue was not justified by the experience in England, Canada and New Zealand. In the latter country, he the general opinion was that.the penny postage would mean a loss of revenue, but within two years after adoption the revenue increased so much that it made up for any initial reduction. Similar conditions were experienced when it was reintroduced after its abolition as a war measure.
