Before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s -Co.urt this morning, Margaret i’oung was charged with driving a motor car along Haven road on the 19th April at a speed dangerous to the public. Constable Berthelson gave evidence that he timed accused over a distance of eight chains, and her speed worked out at 32 miles per hour. Witness continued that she Then increased speed to what- he estimated to be 40 miles per hour. There was considerable traffic on the road travelling Nelsonwards, and over the timed distance accused overtook and passed two cars. While not disputing Constable.Berthel.son’s evidence accused (represented by Air 11. Cheek) pleaded not guilty, and contended that her driving was not in a manner dangerous to the public. The Magistrate held that as Haven Road was frequented hv children and as the Russell Street intersection had to be passed accused’s speed might have been dangerous to the public. She was convicted and fined £2 and costs 10/-.
