NEW DOCTOR OF SCIENCE

Mr E. Kidson, research officer of tlie Commonwealth Meteorological department, has been informed that the degree of doctor of science has been conferred on him by the University of New Zealand, says the Melbourne Argus. Dr. Kidson (who is a son of Mr C. Kidson of Vanguard Street, Nelson) has had a distinguished career as a meteorologist, and has conducted observations of meteorological phenomena in many parts of the world. He graduated as master of science and master of arts in New Zealand, and was later appointed as magnetic observer to the Carnegie Institute at Washington. After service in the United States and on the nonmagnetic observation yacht Carnegie, lie pvas assigned to the general magnetic survey in Australia, and in this capacity did valuable research work. During the war Dr. Kidson served as officer in charge of the meteorological section of the Roval Engineers at Salonica, was awarded the 0.8. E., and mentioned in despatches. At the conclusion of the war he was appointed research officer to the Central Weather Bureau, and has since been conducting observations on the upper atmosphere. The thesis for which he was awarded the degree of doctor of science contained the results of observations made in Victoria on cloud heights. ‘
