FANCIERS' SHOW

JUDGE’S COMMENT

Mr J. W. Heath who has just returned from judging the utility classes at Hastings and Gisborne, in commenting on the various, classes in the utility section at the Nelson show, stated that the Orpingtons exhibited this year compare very favourably with previous years Of the male birds the cockerels were the best although the winning bird could be shorter in feather. Taking the Orpingtons as a whole, the pullets were the best class, the winning bird standing out in all qualities. Minorcas

were very good, no doubt the championship being responsible for a big entiy. The winning pullet was a typical Minorca and the best bird m the whole of the utility section. The cockerels could do with being a little largei. The Silver Wyandottes aro better than previous years both in typ e and colour the winning cockerel and pullet oeino; excellent in texture an dbone. The White Leghorns were strong classes throughout. The cock birds were all good birds whilst the liens also were a splendid class, the winner being a fine; bird. 1 lie comprised a big entry but couid be improved in size, the three placed, birds being the only ones approaching the size required. The pullets were hard to

separate, there being some real good ones. The winner could be a little tighter in feather, otherwise is very fine. The Brown Leghorns were small classes but comprised some birds of very good quality, the pullet being of good type and colour. The Barred Rocks showed an improvement on previous years, lhe Rhode Island Reds were a big improvement both in numbers and quality, the winning adult birds being grand specimens of the breed. This is the third year in succession that Mi Heath lias judged the whole of the utility classes at Hie Nelson show'.
