In response to a petition from a number of settlers the Post Master General has authorised the opening of a te ephone exchange at Tadmor. flic work is to be put in hand when ~o applications for exchange connections have been signed. . "Travellers by horse-drawn vehicles aro finding the bitumen roads in the Taranaki district difficult to travel on. During the summer there is dust on ttio road, which enables the bores to obtain something in the nature of a foothold hut. the weather has washed the road dean, consequently horses slip and lan when least expected. There lias been an epidemic of clothesline robberies at Balclutha of late, and also a few instances of whisky and coal stealing. To secure sufficient hardwood piles and totara timber for the completum of the hew wharf at New Plymouth within a reasonable time is proving a very difficult matter for the Harbour Board. l ie original contractors did not deliver the full quantities within the specified periods but, as some timber was still being sent, to cancel the timber contracts immediately and enforce the penalties was not regarded as wise. llie original contract tor the piles was cancelled and the new contractors undertook to give delivery within two months.

All amusing incident occurred in a DunedTu street last week, when a butch* or threw away a piece of meat, which was immediately attacked by a cat, adog, and a duck. The cat bit the meat, while the dog bit the cat, which stood in the road with a back resembling that of a camel. The duck then commenced to peck the dog, which soon ran away. Tims the duck became owner of the meat.
The bursting of one of the new water mains in Tasman Street early this morning considerably inconvenienced householders in that portion of the town while repairs were being carried out. The Superintendent of the .Mental Hospital wishes to thank the Girls’ Dramatic Club for allowing n number of patients to witness a dress rehearsal of “Quality Street.” A social evening in connection with the Ladies’ Missionary Auxiliary of the Congregational Church was held in the Schoolroom last evening to welcome Miss Hilda Small, of Samoa, who is home on furlough. There was a large attendance, and short addresses were given hv the chairman. Misses Moffnti and 'Buigent, and Mr Phelan. A stirring address by Miss Small on the educational, social, and spiritual aspects of missionary work in the Islands was listened to with deep interest. Native dresses, curios, and specimens of fancy needlework were exhibited. An enjoyable programme was provided by Miss Carpenter and Mesdames Goodman and Jury. Miss Small will conduct special missionary services, morning and evening, at the Congregational Church next Sunday.
A concert party from town will visit the Stewart Estate, Redwood’s Valley, on Monday evening next, and give another entertainment on the lines of that which was so appreciated by the residents on a former occasion. There will be a dance in conjunction with the concert. The function is under the auspices of the Redwood Football Club, and will be held in 'the Stewart Estate Packing Shed.
Attention is drawn to the Brownie Troop which is being formed in All Saints’ Schoolroom, in connection with the Girl Guides. Girls from 7 to 11 are invited to join. Mr A.
