(United Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, April 7. Speaking in regard to the final victory loan of £IO,(JOO,UUO authorised by (the fast session of Parliament,/the ftofArthur Myers (Acting-Minister of- Finance) remarked That. -although . a fair -amount ofi money has already been sub’scribed to this loan through the Treasury it is apparent that some people do not realise that the compulsory clauses of the Finance Act still operate, or that 'tho- raising of the amount in quesr i tion is equally as important as those sums which were floated during the actual period of hostilities. 1 . M Gur part in . this war -is not. com*’ Ipiote,” said Mr Myers,:“until we have I fully' honoured, the .obligations we ? enf tepad Into with Vfe ■ object of - .playing 1 our part m the winning of the great vic--1 torv that has?crowned Rie efforts ;<M' the; i Empire and -our-. Allies. If must be 1 remembered that not only* -is there eontinumg expenditure on. account ofouii military forces until demobilisation,; but ;..tittere is .also .a large liability in reesbect of gratuities .* to soldiers, cost of repatriation, etc. .Until,.our monetary responsibilities in. every shape have been 'completely met "it is our duty to maintain our lipancial ettort m ■iuU war strength.. It may bp wpU at this juncture,” added, the Minister, “to give a reminder : that, those • taxpayers not found to-be subscribing adequately to the war loan will bo approached urn dor the compnkorv clc.nses of the Finance Act with a view ■ to ensuring then making. contributions .. commensurate with their means. The rate of interest payable on subscriptions exacted compulsorily is, of course, d ner cent only. I However. I feel assured that .the nr gency of the need for continued in- , vestment in war stock has only to re ; placed before the notice of the country : to 'be at oncj? recognised and complied i with. Having regard to pur large exj penditnve on account of war debt. ! concluded Mr'Myers. ”1 therefore de- ■ sire again to point out that, to my i mind, the duty of. each citizen i« no ' lose, obviously now than it was during the period df-.-the, war to produce to the fnl 1-st extent of his powers, to cnltivato a reasonahlp economy and !hr H. ; and to lend, everything possible to toe fslate ,oall '
