ACHIEVEMENTS AND AIM OF I LOCAL BRANCH. I The numerous willing helpers in connection with the above Society will be I gratified to learn that as a result of their combined efforts the amount of £370 is now in hand, in addition to which a sun; |of £l5O has already been .sent to the ißritish Red Cross Society in London. The local committee desire to raise a 1 further £3O, so that another amount of £4OO (the cost of a motor ambulance), may be sent to London with the recommendation that this be used for the purchase of a motor ambulance for the front. With reference to the need for motor ambulances, we quote the following from the "British Medical Journal' of Oct. 31st: — ... "At the end of August we intimated that motor ambulances would probably be required for military service. .Since that aate it is not too much to say that the motor ambulance has come in with a mighty rush. Its suffering-saving capacities and the earlier treatment which the prompt transport secures, have oeen abundantly demonstrated. . "Alfred Keogh and Sir Frederick Treves, on their return from a recent visit to the base hospitals, declare that 'the need which transcends all other needs at this moment is an adequate supply of properly-fitted motor ambulanOnly last- month Sir Frederick Treves reported that the pressure upon the British Red Cross Society was more severe than at any previous period during the war. In eight days nearly 70,000 wounded soldiers were removed from trains to Tiospitals. It is particularly desired that [the £3O necessarv to bring the amount in hand up to £4OO should bo gained [within the next few days, so that the -money may be cabled Home before the holidays. . An opportunity to assist will be given to-morrow evening, when a number of useful and valuable articles will be auctioned by Mr Gould in the Temperance Hall, proceeds of this sale being for the Red Cross Fund. Included in the articles for sale are large Pile carpet square* brass fender> carved foot-stool, plate-glass painting, graphaphone, autoharp, gold watch, quantity of e. p. ware, ornaments, 6 das. jars, of strawberry iam, large ham/Egyptian necklace and ring, 10 doz. eggs, butter, Kroger coins, Boer testament, Christmas puddings, etc.,| etc.
