FOUR GERMAN CRUISERS PARTICIPATE
MANY BUILDINGS DAMAGED ONE! DEATH REPORTED. HARTLEPOOL TOWN HALL SLIGHTLY DAMAGED. INHABITANTS FLEE FROM SCARBOROUGH. (Received Dec. 17. 8.50 a.m.} . . - LONDON, Dec. 16. Two cruisers bombarded Whitby. A number of houses were partially destroyed;" one. person being killed., and several injured. The Press Bureau states that the Germans engaged the -fortress of West Hartlepool, and were driven-off. There are huge holes: in several buildings. The Town Hall was slightly damaged: The Scarborough wireless station is intact. Manv Scarboroughites fled towards Hull. * . The bombardment began at eight in the morning. It is reported that sevi-val buildings wore damaged. The Exchange Company reports four German cruisers participated.
