DEPRESSION IN THE FLAX TRADE.

DECLINE IN THE HEMP OUTPUT. WELLINGTON, Monday. The monthly report of the Chief Fibre Expert shows a serious decline in the quantity of hemp produced. In January 6323 bales were graded compared with 12,086 bales for the corresponding month last year. For the 12 months ending January 31, 1909, the grading totalled 83,606 bales, a decrease for 12 months of 55,414 bales. The Expert states that the millers are despondent at the outlook and a good many will close down if a further fall in piice should occur.
