HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.

WELLINGTON, Monday. A cable from tho High Commissioner, dated London, December 6tK, says: — The mutton market is very dull, and the supply exceeds the demand. Hucr Plate mutton is in large supply, being strong pushed for sale at 2%d. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 3 r, s,d; North Island at 3 : ) s d. Buyer* are not inclined .to mako forward purchases of mutton at present price;'. The lamb market is quiet, and there is dull wile for all brands. This season 's Canterbury lamb is quoted at s]/4d;5 ] /4d; Autralian, 4d; River Plate, 4d. The beef market, failing supplies, is increasing; hindquarters are quoted at 3 Vi d ; forequarters, 2%d. The butter market is steady, and fair business is doing. Current quotations are: — Choicest N.Z., 111; Danish, USs; Australian, 107s; Argentine, 107s; Siberian 102s per cwt. The cheese market is firm, and there is a better demand. White makes are quoted at 60s, and coloured, owing to short supply, at 625. Tho hemp market continues dull. Current quotations are: — Good failgrade on spot £24 10s; fair grade on spot, £22 10s; fair current Manila on spot, £23 10s; January- March shipment, good fair grade, £24; fair grade, £22; fair current Manila, £22 10s. Last week's Manila output amounted to 26,000 bales. The stock held in London is 239 tons. The ccksfoot seed market is quiet, and buyers are not keen to do business until they receive New Zealand reports. The hop market is quie, with r. tendency in favour of buyers. The wool market haa been very irrogular; but the saleß closed firm. Tho following shipments arrived frm tho River Plate during the mouth of January: — London: mutton, 57,631 lbs; lamb, 59,2831b5; at Liverpool, 115,9021bs mutton and 31,5501bs lambs; at Hull, 9199 lbs. munttou and 13501b5. lamb; at Cardiff, 32201bs mutton and 9501bs lamb. Butter: At London and Southamptop, 18,408 cwts. (Tho Board of Trade return for No vember of the pasengers from and to the United Kingdom shows that during the mouth 23,450 passengers left the .United Kingdom for abroad, bringing the total for the eleven months of this year up to 366,931, in comparison with 612.994 in the same period of 1907. Of these 250,837 were of British origin.
