Sir, — In common with a good many other ratepayers, I should be pleased if you can tell me whether there is any truth in tho rumour current just row in this city to the effect that the City Council have paid away somewhero in tire region of three hundred pounds (£300) of tho ratepayers' money in an error to a contractor oje»
and above money due to him; I have been informed that the above is cor^_ reot, and should be pleased if you can inform mo that such is not the case. I am, etc., ANXIOUS RATEPAYER. (It is understood that a payment was made in error, and that steps are in progress to recover the amount. The matter has not been overlooked by us.— Ed. N.E.M.)
