THE PRESS GAG AND THE CLOSURE.
WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Yesterday's sitting of the Couucil was much the longest of the session so far, and it was almost entirely ocs cupied by the aiscusion on the Sactmct ' Ballot Bill. A determined fight; was • put up by a minority of m\:inbe;s , against the "gag" clause. Corapared with this the deletion of thaSOO majority proviso was a detail. The I fight against the silencing of the ! press and platform was kept up. until ! an early hour this morning, the mi- . nority hoping to tire out tho supr porters of the clause. The good i humour of the proceedings was some- - what disturbed at one stage by ihe - closure motion, which was moved by 5 Mr Beehan, and carried. The clausa : was agreed to with minor amend- " ments shortly before 1.30, the sitting I of the Council thus outlasting that ef the House by about an tour.
