MANAWATU ASSIZES.
[IJ snmt Pbes? AssoßiAnfo-j.] PALMERSTON N., Thursday. The Supreme Court session was concluded to-day before Mr Justice Chapman. Thos. Gleeson was charged with a breach of the Bankruptcy Act by incurring debts without any reasonable ground or expectation of paying the same. The D.O.A. produced tho bankrupt's books, in which a bad state of affairs was disclosed. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy on the grounds of the accused's inexperience, and sentence was reserved. 1' riday. Thomas Gleeson, of Rongotea, who was found guilty at the Supreme Court of a breach of the Bankruptcy Act by incurring debts ' without reasonable . grounds of being able to pay the same, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment without hard _.bour. In refusing probation. Mr Justice Chapman said that the Legislature intended in cases like the present that the accused should be punished wth imprisonment. He expressed regret at having to send to prison a young man of presumably good character, but he could not set at naught the provisions of the Legislature.
