Two noted r.hiefs were forcibly rescued from the police, one of whom was shot. The King of the Gr-eks refuses to return to At'liens unless Crete be ceded to him. A semi-official St. Petersburg!! journal denies that Russia has been negotiawßS wiih Turkey, to the exclusion of the other Powers. Much irritation hfis been exhibited ill France in consequence ofCountßismarck's circular, affirming the freedom of South Germany to unite with North Germany. Bavnrin"considers an alliance with France inexpedient. The M«xifan Government refuse to surrender the body of the Emperor Maximilian unless the Republic is recognised by the-European Powers. The Pan-Anglican Synod has commenced its sittings. Eighty bishops are in attendance Tli*>proceedings are private. The Earl of Derby and the Chancellor of the Exchequer are visiting Ireland. The cattle plague has disappeared from the United Kingdom. Parliament is to meet in November to vote supplies for the Abyssinian war.
