At a meeting of the Canterbury Rifle Association on Friday last, Mr Weld was elected President, and no less than thirty-two VicePresidents were chosen. The Superintendent of the Province was appointed ex officio patron of the Society.

A woman named Craig, wife of a fisherman, living in Little Taranaki-street, was nearly burnt to death on Wednesday last. She was stooping down with her back to the fire when her dress caught, and was soon in a blaze. Corporal Doran, of the police, was fortunately passing, and with great presence of mind rushed into the house and wrapping the unfortunate woman in heavj' blankets, extinguished the flames. She was, however, much burnt, but is, we understand, progressing favorably. A r . Z. Advertiser. April 27.
