HAWKES' BAY.
Wairoa. — Yesterday's mail brought letters confirmatory to some extent of the rumours current as to an intended raid by Kereopa into the Wairoa district. -The iparty is said to consist of Te IJriwera, Waikato, Eon^Pwakaata, and Ngatikahuhgunu,' and' to I ' number 800 men. The number may be exaggerated, but it is evident that Kereopa- and Patara eluded Colonel Lyon and are doing their best to carry desolation into other parts of the colony. We have no doubt the Government will be quite prepared to give them a warm reception when they shew on tbiß side of Waikare Moana. Native Kuiw.^-The natives- of Poverty - Bay are said to have manufactured from peaches, plums, and other fruits, a species of rum or arrack, which has a highly intoxicating effect; They are reported to have made several hogsheads of it this season, to say nothing of what they may have consumed during the process of manufacture. — H. B. Herald. April 24. More Prisoners for the Chathams. Upwards of 100 prisoners from the Poverty Bay district were yesterday dispatched for the Chatham Islands in the steamer St, Kilda, being the second batch of Hau Haus who have " left their country for their country's good." The St. Kilda, we understand, is expected back in a week. H. j?. Herald. April 24.
