OTAGO.
The Otago people have been inconvenienced by a singular strike. The tolls on the country roads being now very high, the whole of thode engaged in the carrying business have agreed not to load for hire until these charges have been reduced, in consequence of which strike business with the country districts is entirely suspended. The carriers have memorialised the Superintendent upon their grievance, who replied that the Executive were not at liberty to alter the decision of the Provincial Council with regard to the tolls. At a subsequent meeting of the carriers it was stated that a six-horse team on metalled roads costs yearly between Dunedin and Tokomairiro, 150Z; Tuapeka, 120/ ; while the tolls alone to Waikouaiti exceed the expense of water carriage.
