SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Rangiora Borough School. The Itangiora Borough School Committee met in the school on Wednesday evening, Mr. C. J. Smith being in the chair. Others present were: W. A. Rowse, H. A. Johnstone, T. May, M. C. Ormandy, A. Cambridge, C. J. Keir (secretary), and the Headmaster, J. T. 0. Stephens. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. Purchase and Dalzell. Headmaster’s Report. The Headmaster reported that the roll number of the school stood at 399 (213 boys, 186 girls), but that the bad weather had lowered the average for the past four weeks to 386.4. The average attendance for the term was 380, which was, he said, very satisfactory for the winter. Fancy Dress Dance. Preparations for the fancy dress dance on 18th insant were well under weigh. The old Standard IV.shrdlush The old Standard IV. room had been remodelled, and was now occupied by Standard VI., while Standard IV. have moved to the open air room formerly occupied by Standard VI. The term examinations had interfered with a proposed trip to the Winter Show, but the Headmaster had decided to send Standards V. and VT. on Tuesday, the I.6th instant.
Dust Nuisance. Owing to the great quantities of dust which gather on the walls, which covered with maps, •hartw, postnwa,
etc., the headmaster suggested that the caretaker brush up the floors with disinfected sawdust, which would eliminate the dust nuisance. This practice had been suggested by the Education Department in a recently issued circular. Seven-a-Side. The annual Seven-a-Side Tournament for North Canterbury schools was to be held at Dudley Park, Rangiora, on Saturday, August 13. It was suggested that it would have a good effect on the boys if members of the Committee were present. Comprehensive Reports. The chairman congratulated the headmaster upon his reports which,'he said, were the most comprehensive the Committee had yet had. The chairman congratulated the headmaster and Mr. Southgate on the success of the school Rugby team, which had won its! grade. The headmaster said that all the credit was due to Mr. Southgate, who was the best and most enthusiastic coach the school had yet had. The chairman asked the headmaster to convey the thanks and congratulations of the Committee to Mr Southgate. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of congratulation to Mr. Bignell, who had again been elected as North Canterbury’s representative on the Education Board, and to Mr. Rands, who had allowed himaelf to be nominated. Accounts totalling £66/5/6 ware passed for payment.
