BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Forinsghly Meeting at Kaiapoi. The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday, the 9th August, those present being the Mayor (Rev. W. H. A. Viekeyr), Crs. Dunn, Thorne, Linklater, Williams, Rinaldi, Barnard, Dr. Ramsay and Morgan Williams. The Mayor cordially welcomed Cr. A. Linklater, the successful candidate at the recent by-election. Motions of sympathy with the relatives of Mr. F. Ellenberger and Mrs. A. Wells Newton were cai’ried in silence.

Correspondence. Mr. Eric Gray was granted permission to erect a signboard . outside his premises. The Canterbury Progress League applied for and was given the usual grant. Mr. E. Read was given permission toi erect a ticket box in front of the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi. An application by L. Munn to have a dangerous tree removed was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. An offer by the Rev. C. L. Sparrow of a quantity of firewood in the grounds of the Vicarage for relief of needy was referred to Relief Committee.

Finance. The chairman of Finance Committee, Cr. Dunn, reported balances as follows: General Fund. dr. £2573/8/-, Electric Supply Account, cr. £1197 13/6. Engineer’s Report. Mr. H. W. Childsa reported that eight street lamps had been replaced, all meters read and accounts rendered. A two horse-power motor erected and a J horse-power pump installed, by an outside contractor. Supervisor’s Report. The Town Clerk (Mr. R. J. Smith) reported that twelve unemployed had been worked , by Council and six by the Beautifying and Burgesses Association. Twelve chains Kairaki Road had been clayed and portions of Nortii Road and Cass Street drains cleaned. The surface water on the Beach Road had been drawn off. A vote of thanks was accorded the Kaiapoi Woollen Co. for supplying cinders for roads.

General. Dr. Ramsay reported that the Beautifying and Burgesses Association had decided to hold a carnival in the Borough Hall grounds in March, 1933. Cr Thorne complained of pools of water in Otak'i Street. Cr. Rinaldi suggested appointing a further employee to the road staff. Cr. Rinaldi said that an offer had been made by Mr. Clarke that if dead trees at The Pines Avere cut down he would saw the wood into blocks and deliver to Kaiapoi for relief purposes free of charge. The matter was referred to. Relief Committee as to the giving away of the wood. It was decided to call for applications for the position of Caretaker of the Borough Buildings and the Finance Committee were empowered to act.
