UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE.

Fortnightly Meeting. Mj>. W. A. Rowse presided over a meeting of the Unemployment Committee in the Rangiora Council Chambers on Wednesday. The following members were present: S. T. Seward, H. J. Thompson (acting certifying officer), J. R. Wilkinson, C. W. Tyler, S. G. Dailey, C. S. Ayers, R. R, Gillanders, J. A. Ivory, J. Lindon, and the Town Clerk (Mr. J. M. Fraser). Correspondence was received from the Unemployment Board stating that there would be no further extension of the 4A scheme beyond 30th September, and that free issues of meat would stop to all men except very urgent cases. Twelve applications received from farmers for men under 4A scheme were passed. Meat Stoppage. Regarding the stoppage of free meat supplies,' My. Gillanders moved that further information be sought in connexion with urgent cases. The motion was carried. “

Town Clerk’s Resignation. As his duties as Town Clerk were seriously interfered with by his work as secretary of the Committee the Town Clerk asked to be relieved of his duties. Mr. J. A. Ivory moved, and Mr. S. G. Dailey seconded, that Mr. Fraser’s resignation be accepted but -that he continue as a member of the Committee. The motion was passed unanimously. Mr. R. R. Gillanders said that a new secretary must be obtained and that the meeting should appoiut one if the men were not to be-allowed to drift. Mr. A. Bennett suggested that an unemployed man be appointed to the position, but it was pointed out that very, few unemployed registered men were capable of undertaking the work. It was decided after some discussion that Mr. Chappell be appointed to the vacant position, that the allocation of funds be made by the Post Office, and that Mr Chappell do the executive Avork. A \ r ote of thanks Avas passed to Mr. J. Wood for his gift of fish to the relief depot.

Unemployed Single Men. Mr. Wilkinson urged that more be done for unemployed single men, as no further AA r ork could be got for them on farms. It aauis decided that Messrs. Roavsc, Fraser, Dailey and Ayers form a committee to pass inquiry sheets, the committee to meet eA r erv Monday at 9.30 a.m.
