Pamphlet Issued To Schools
AUCKLAND, Wed. (Sp.J —‘‘l do not think we realised that a publication of this nature was contemplated. 1 do not think it is a suitable pamphlet to have in our schools, declared Mr D. McCarroll at. a meeting of the Auckland Education Board today. Mr McCarroll was referring to a 40-page pamphlet (New Zealand Trades Alphabet) which, he said, contained 36 pages of advertising and was being distributed in schools. The matter was raised recently in the House of Representatives. Mr W. I. Bowyer said the pamphlet was not one the board had adopted.
Mr I. J. Day said the board should have seen the pamphlet before authorising its distribution in schools, but as it was already in the schools it was serving no purpose to argue about it now.
There was no doubt that children had derived much pleasure from reading it, and some knowledge. They were subjected to advertisements every day through the newspapers and other means. Further discussion was deferred until the next meeting of the board.
