Australian Troopship
SYDNEY Wed. (1 p.m.) The interstate steamer Westralia has been secretly reconverted into a troopship and is expected to leave Sydney late this month for an undisclosed Middle East port, according to the Sydney Daily Telegraph. The paper adds that before reconversion the liner had been partly restored as a passenger ship after war service as a trooper.
Four months ago work on refitting the ship began, but three weeks ago under orders from the Australian Naval Board, dockyard workers began tearing out the luxury fittings and replacing the wartime austerity fixtures. The Navy Office at first refused to give any information, but later the Minister of the Navy (Mr W J. Riordani confirmed that the vessel would act as a troopship in the Middle East.
