Guatemalan Revolt Dead Over 300

GUATEMALA, Wed. (11.30 a.m.)— President Juan Jose Arevalo remained firmly in office tonight after putting down the bloody 24-hour army revolt * against his moderately left-wing administration.

Some 300 persons were reported killed and many more were wounded in what was the worse of the score of uprisings during Arevalo's five-year regime.

The revolt began on Monday with the assassination of Colonel Francisco Arana, chief of the Guatemalan Army, and one of the strong figures in the Government. He had been mentioned as the most likely candidate to succeed Arevalo. Rebel forces in the capital surrendered unconditionally last night after their headquarters was set on fire by constant strafing by loyal planes.
