Lords Amend, Pass Steel Bill

LONDON, Wed. 1 10 a.in.i—The predominantly Conservative House of Lords, which is hostile to nationalisation. tonight passed the Government bill to nationalise Britain’s iron and steel industry. The House, however, made some important changes. One of these would postpone nationalisation until after next year’s general election, to give the country a chance to have second thoughts on it. The Government is expected to reject this amendment. If the Lords then refuse to give way tlie Government can make its bill law before the end of the present Parliament without the Lords’ approval.

This can bo done by the parliament Bill, which the Government introduced last year to reduce the Lords’ powers to delay legislation from two years to one.
