Dairy Cattle For Israel
AUCKLAND, Wed. (Spd—The first official representative of Israel to visit New Zealand is Dr S. Hirsch, lecturer in animal husbandry at the agricultural faculty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is to examine the prospects of buying New Zealand dairy cattle for Israel.
With immigrants arriving in Israel at the rate of 1000 a day. there was an urgent need" to build up the country’s dairy herds and provide an adequate quantity of milk and butter, he said. There were no more than 1000 goodgrade animals in Palestine 25 years ago. and although herds had now been increased to 22,000 head, they were still too small to supply the growing population. Dr Hirsch said he was more interested in increasing the number •of cattle than in their quality. It was considered that imported cows should be a good grade of Friesian or Jersey rather than pedigree. However, every animal must be worth its existence; the country was too small to support even a single scrub cow.
