WELLINGTON. Wed. • Sp.).—Replying 1.0 a request from Mrs Ross (O—• Hamilton) that legislation be passed giving judges discretionary power to order flogging in cases of rape or indecent assault on girls under the age of .15, the acting Minister of Justice •Mr Jones) stated in the House of Representatives this afternoon, that it. is not. the intention of the Government to introduce such legislation. The Prime Minister gave a negative answer to Mr W. H. Fortune fO—Eden) who advocated an inquiry into Ihc New Zealand press “in view of frequent accusations against the so-called capitalistic press by Socialist members inside and outside the House.’’ The Minister of Industries and Commerce has informed Mrs Ross that the question of standardising women's and girls’ underwear is not under consideration but, at the request of women's organisations and with the support of the retail trade and some leading manufacturers, Ihc Standard’s Institute is endeavouring to secure uniformity in terms commonly used to designate the sizes of the various garments.
