Scouts Invested By Commissioner

Twelve Northland boys were invested as Boy Scouts and Wolf Cubs during the week-end when Commissioner N. M. Matheson, of Auckland, director of lone scouting in New Zealand, visited several centres.

The commissioner began his tour at Maungaturoto where he met about 12 parents and 20 boys. Here he invested the first two Wolf Cubs in the district, Richard Cullen and Vernon Powell.

Saturday morning saw him at Waipu, where a field day was held, 15 scouts and 10 cubs taking pari. Here two cubs, Ron Williams (Puwera) and Derry Gordon were invested, and five scouts, Rodney Gates, William Ryan, Ralph Sandford, Richard Ruddell, and Abraham Orikena (Taka.hiwai).

A church parade at the Waipu Presbyterian Church occupied Sunday morning, the Rev. D. McNeur appealing to the congregation to encourage adult leadership in the town. PARENTS’ COMMITTEE.

During the afternoon a picnic of parents, friends and boys was held at Waipu Cove. Here a small parents’ committee, consisting of Mesdames C. C. M. Gordon and D. McAulay, the mothers of the two patrol leaders of the Waipu scout patrols, and Messrs T. Ewen and S. Mcßae was set up. The Rev. McNeur was appointed convener. Commissioner Matheson travelled to Hukerenui yesterday morning where he addressed schoolboys on the scouting movement. ,

A meeting was heid in the hall during the 'evening, where five boys were invested as cubs. They were sixer Peter Koatley, Lester Sowry. Michael House, John Le Clerc, and Charlie Neho. Brian Mahoney and Teddy Smith were invested as scouts. At all the towns the commissioner visited a number fit' lads sought to be enrolled as recruits.
