Battleships On Reserve
LONDON, Wed. (12.30 p.m.) The Admiralty announced tonight that the British battleships Anson and Howe will be placed in reserve in a move to reduce the number of capital ships in full seagoing commission. An official statement said the decision was taken because of the need at present of having as many smaller vessels as possible in full commission. The Admiralty said reduction in the number of battleships would make it possible to maintain more minesweepers, frigates and destroyers fully operational. The statement added: "It will be clearly understood that all of our capital ships, whether in reserve or otherwise, will be available for operational duty if the occasion demands.”
In the Western Union naval exercise earlier this month the concentration was on the use of small warships. In January, 1943, it was announced that five of Britain’s oldest capital ships—the battleships Queen Elizabeth, Valiant. Nelson and Rodney and the battlecruiser Renown —were to be scrapped.
