Hikurange's Successful Boxing Tournament
THE Hikurangi Boxing Gymnasium Club wound up its season with a second successful tournament on Saturday night. The 16-bout programme provided good entertainment for a fair house in the Criterion Theatre, with boys from several Bay of Islands gyms, the Whangarei district, Hikurangi, Waipu and Maungaturoto taking part.
Best bout of the night featured H Sadler (Tautoro) and Lloyd Williams (Hikurangi). Sadler is one of Northland's promising amateurs and against Williams, he showed cleverness with his left hand, and in weaving to avoid punishment on defence. He was too quick for the game Hikurangi boy, both in movement and in punching, and scored repeatedly, particularly in the second and third rounds, with stinging straight lefts to the face. Williams had no counter to this punch which gave Sadler a well-merit-ed win. W. Flower (Whangarei) boxed intelligently against an awkward opponent in D. Maunsell (Ngawha). The Northerner relied on boringtactics but Flower beat him to the punch with straight hitting and had the fight well won in'the second round. MAUNGATUROTO WINNERS Two promising Maungaturoto boys. B. Irving and D. Wyatt, created a good impression and thoroughly deserved their wins. The cleverest “baby” was undoubtedly young Platt from Kamo. For his age he showed outstanding ability. Mr Tom Harmon (Maungatapere) capably refereed. The tournament will put the Hikurangi club on its feet next season. Trophies were presented to the winners by the president, (Mr Jim Scott).
