APIA, Thu. (lO.a.m.).—The investiture of the High Commissioner of Western Samoa (Lieutenant-Colonel F. W. Voelcker, of Kerikeri) with the insignia of the DSO formed part of the reception held by the Samoan people in honour of Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg at Mulinuu. The award recognised Colonel Voelcker’s services in command of the 3rd Battalion, Fiji Infantry Regiment, and the citation referred to the number of operations carried out by the unit in the Pacific which required determined leadership on his part. His Excellency also presented the DCM to Lieutenant A. B. Stewart, of Apia. It was stated that as a sergeant in the 2nd NZEF at Capuzzo, Lieutenant Stewart showed cool courage and the utmost gallantry and determination in engaging a force of enemy armoured vehicles with his gun. He continued in action even when the gun carriage was set on fire and he and his comrades were wounded.
