King's Kava
The rarely performed ceremony of the King's kava, showing the gratitude and affection of the Samoan people toward New Zealand, was conducted in honour of Sir Bernard at Apia yesterday. On the same meeting ground where the new Samoan flag was hoisted His Excellency was received with the marks of respect that in Samoan tradition are reserved for men of the highest distinction. The Hon. Tamasee, leader of one of the oldest tribes in Samoa, was the first to welcome the visitors. Representatives of each district of Samoa later made presentations to Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg, including a special food offering to demonstrate respect on the occasion of a visit of a very distinguished person. Reading a message from the King, with the traditional staff of an orator in his hand, the Governor General said that His Majesty sent greetings and good wishes for the well-being and happiness of Western Samoa.
