WORTH £ls A TON Although he stated today that he found the first deposit 25 years ago. he did not turn his find to profit liecause he was not in a financial position to do so at the time. Collaborating with the late Mr T. A. Black, he claims that he found eight other deposits of gold, ranging in value from a few pence to several pounds sterling a ton. The sampe tested was stated to come from a deposit worth £ls a ton. Tests were carried out by a Whnngarei chemist and at the Whangarei Boys' High School.
Previously numerous places have been found in Northland where gold was evident, but in unpayable quantities . i

“At the meeting next week I do not intend to give the exact location of each deposit ,but to give general indications of the various spots in Northland where I have found gold, ’ he said today.
“T Uo not want people with no knowledge of gold-prospecting wasting their time and money trying to find the mineral.
“The job is one for an expert, and I am hoping that interested people will band together to grub-stake someone who knows gold when lie sees it, and who could find the deposits by following my general indications. “I do not want to create a false gold rush ,and that is one of the reasons why I have never tried to capitalise on my knowledge.
“In my opinion, it would pay people with the time and money to go prospecting in Northland in the summer months.”
Of the four samples of ore produced by Mr Crawford, three were of the type of porous quartz found on the Coromandel Peninsula, but the sample tested was unusually light and nonporous.
