Northland's Rep. Rugby Programme This Season

A COMPREHENSIVE and interesting- programme has been arranged for the Northland Rugby public and its representative team this season.

These fixtures are definitely on the bill: Wednesday August IS, v. Wairarapa, at Whangarei; Saturday August 21, v. Auckland, at Whangarei (All Black trial Match) : Saturday September 11, v. Taranaki, at New Plymouth; Wednesday September 15, v. Wanganui, at Wanganui; Saturday September 18, v. Waikato, at Hamilton.

A return game against Auckland will be played at Auckland towards the end of September.

It is also anticipated that the NZRU will approve a tour of the Auckland province by a Fijian team, in which case Northland will receive a visit.

The match is expected to take place at Whangarei late in September.

The Tai Tokerau (Northland) Maoris will defend the Prince of Wales Cup against the South Island Maoris at Whangarei in June.

This game will be a trial prior to the selection of the New Zealand Maori team which leaves on July 19 for a tour of Fiji.

This is the biggest representative programme undertaken by the NARU for some years and congratulations are due Messrs D. K. Ross, R. G. Murdoch. J. A. Finlayson and J. Wells, the delegates to the annual meeting of the NZRU in Wellington this week who carried out the arrangements. The three-match tour to Waikato. Taranaki and Wanganui will entail players being away only two Saturdays and the entire representative programme has been organised to limit the time players will be absent from work.

Taranaki. Wanganui and Waikato will probably visit Northland in the 1949 season.

Mr Ross, who returned from Wellington last evening intimated that the NZRU had asked the council of the parent bodv to give favourable consideration to the use of aluminium sprigs in addition to leather and rubber.

The amended rules will not come into force until May 29.

New rule books, embracing the recent changes, are being printed m Wellington and will be circulated throughout the 28 unions in the Dominion at an early date.
