Clash Over Show Dates

"If the Whangarei A. and P. Society does not get Waiotira cattle it has ' had it ’ as far as its show is Concerned.

“Waiotira has the best fat cattle in the Dominion."

Mr J. C. Ambury, delegate from Waiotira, said this at the annual conference of the Northern District of the Royal Agricultural Society Whangarei today. Discussion had arisen over a clash of dates between the Kumeu, Waiotira, and Whangarei societies’ shows. For Whangarei, Mr S. J. Snow said his society wished to follow or precede the Waiotira show. “Over the years our fat slock section has been one of the poorest in New Zealand,” he said.

“Only recently have we been getting Waiotira stock, and this has been building up this part of our show.”

Mr W. Fatterson. for Kumeu, said that his society could not shift its date because it would then clash with the Helensville races. Mr H. H. Munro (Clevodon): Why should a small show like Kumeu shift its date just to suit a big association like Whangarei? Mr Snow: 1 did not say it should. Ali we want is that we should follow or precede 'Waiotira. We wish to cooperate, but we are holding strongly to that point. The Bay of Islands delegate (Mr W. B. Law) moved that the following dates should be fixed: Albany and Waiotira, March 5; Kumeu, March 12; Whangarei, March 19; Wellsford, March 2G. AMENDMENT ADOPTED

An amendment proposed by Mr A. Swaffield (Auckland) was that Whangarei should take March 12 and Kumeu March 19.

Mr Patterson opposed this, saying that Kumeu had had March 12 for a long time and had been assured of a perpetual right to the date. Another delegate asked why Kumeu should be so obstinate. The amendment was carried. When it became the motion, Mr Patterson said he would be prepared to clash with Whangarei on March 12. but did not move an amendment lo this effect.

The motion / was carried

Mr W. C. Wallace (Waikato Central) Wished to move that the Kumeu show and the Whangarei show should run on March 12, but was ruled out of order.

Eventually i,t was decided (without a motion) to leave the matter to the secretary.
