Time Limit, One Grade Competition

The holiday spirit was still apparent with many Whangarei cricketers on Saturday when flannels were donned again following the Christmas break. Seniors and juniors became as one in a one-grade subsidiary competition designed to fill in the remainder of the month till the High School Xl’s are in the field. Four wickets were in use at Kensington, but those on the newest were not very happy about its condition. The grass in the outfield is badly in need of mowing on all wickets. In fact it has not been conducive to good rungetting since very early in the season. Junior players vied with senior i'or individual honours in several instances on Saturday. BIG HITTING THE ORDER Top score of the day with the bat was notched by Hook, of Central, who hit merrily for 51 with Cole (44 retired). and ensured a win for his side. In the same game Bain, of Onerahi, pieced together a nice 48. Philpott (43) and a junior. Haybittle (31) did well for Old Boys B. Each team was allowed two hours in which to bat and the result was judged on the number of runs scored. Many batsmen took this as a signal for a good .hearty swing and feW settled down to play their natural game. The games were all very enjoyable, despite a rain shower or two, but it is doubtful if this type of cricket is timely in view of Whangarei’s challenge at the end of the month. Results are:— NO. 1 SECTION Albion A 69 (Jennings 2G. Jackson 11; Izzard. three lor 23: Edge, two for 0; Wilson, two lor 12), beat Old Boys A G 4 (Edge 14, Troup 14, Haden 10; Jackson, four for 12; 'Coleman, five for 31). City-Central 118 for eight wickets (Hook 51. F. Cole, retired, 44; Drake, lour for 32). beat Onerahi-Cornbined Services 112 for eight wickets (Bain 48, Higgins 20, Langstone 10). NO. 2 SECTION Central-City. 91 for eight wickets (Jenyns 20, Power 20, Kerr 14, McPherson, not out, 13; Ingham, three for 21), beat Onerahi-Cornbined Services, 40 (Dunn 14, Ritch 10 not out; Power, five for 10; Kerr, three for 10). Old Boys E, 130 for seven wickets (Philpott 43. Haybittle 31, Munroe 19). beat Albion B 89 (Spicer 38. L. Madden 26; McLeod, five for 17; Patrick, three for 23).
