Mangonui's Easy Victory

CRICKET

KAITAIA, Mon. (Sp-) After having lost five wickets for 108 runs at the lunch adjournment, Mangonui representative cricket XI went on to beat Hokianga by 196 runs to 64 in a singleinnings game at Kaitaia on Saturday. Played on the A. and P. Oval, the match represented Hokianga’s second consecutive failure to lift the Kingdon Shield, held by Mangonui since pre-war days. Although Mangonui did not field its strongest team, anticipation of better batting strength by the visitors had the defenders worried at mid-day, but Hokianga failed to strike representative form in the first inter-county game of the season in the Far North. RUSSELL FORCEFUL R. Russell’s morning figure of 62 topped Mangonui’s batting list. He was well supported by a fine 42 from A. J. Mackintosh. Both men batted forcefully. Russell opening with the Mangonui captain (W. L. Foster) and Mackintosh going in when the third wicket fell. Foster, partnering Russell, added 15. Russell fell to a fine square leg catch by Powell off R. Gregory, while Foster was snapped up by Mansbridge in slips off the same bowler, who took four wickets for 33. Other Mangonui scores were E. Jamieson 25, B. Thompson 22, and R. Harrison 14Harrison was just starting to smack the bowling and had lifted veteran Ted Kingdon for six over the stand when bowled by N. Stevens. GREGORY BOWLS WELL After Friday’s rain the wicket favoured the bowlers and the outfield was sluggish, but both Russell and Mackintosh scored freely with boundary shots. Kingdon, whose slow spinners commanded respect, took two wickets for 36 and Stevens 2 for 32. Gregory was maintaining a good length with his fast deliveries and collected both W. Hoddle and W. Edwards cheaply with “shooters.” W. Armstrong and J. McHassie, each with 17, topped the Hokianga batting list. None of the remaining visitors could reach double figures against the Mangonui attack, which was well distributed. C. Armstrong made 8, Andrews 6 and Powell 6. Russell took 3 for 4. J. i Beazley 2 for 3 and G. Dawson 2 for 18.
