Near Tragedy When seamen Miss Ship

NEW PLYMOUTH, Thu. (Sp.)—Two members of the crew of the steamer I lahana nearly lost their lives yesterc ay in an attempt to swim out to their ship, which had cast off and was about half a mile off shore.

When the ship left the wharf six members of the crew were missing, and five of these came down in time to see the ship in the stream.

Two of the men dived into the water and swam out towards the ship. The stronger swimmer noticed that his friend was in difficulties and went to his assistance.

They were both picked up by the pilot launch returning from the Manana, which took them and the seamen on the wharf out to the ship. There was a heavy sea running and the men had difficulty in climbing the ship’s side. One lost his grip and fell into the water, narrowly missing being crushed between the ship and the launch.

Eventually the five men were taken aboard and the Mahana continued to Lyttelton.
