Sugar issue For Jam-making
WELLINGTON, Thu. (P.A.).—The release of a further 31b of sugar against each ration book for home jam-making was announced yesterday by the Minister of Supply (Mr Ncrdmcyer).
He emphasised that because of shipping difficulties it might not be possible for all grocers to supply the extra sugar to customers immediately, but steps had been taken to expedite shipments to districts where stocks were short.
The special coupon Y 27 had been declared valid for 31b of sugar from January 7 to February 29. The Minister said it would be appreciated if consumers refrained from purchasing the extra sugar until it was actually required.
Power Pole Wrecked WELLINGTON. Thu. (P.A.).—The partial derailment of an electric railway unit in a siding in Khandallah yesterday morning wrecked one of the power poles on the line, and it was not until much later in the day that power was restored.
The electric car ran through the siding, demolished the heavy concrete stop-block at its end and broke off the power pole well beyond the stopblock.
There were only a few passengers in the car at the time and none was injured, but the driver was taken to hospital suffering from shock, but apparently otherwise uninjured.
