Five Cases Of Paratyphoid
AUCKLAND, Thu. (Sp.) Four adults believed to be suffering from, paratyphoid “3,” a disease having symptoms similar to those of food poisoning, were admitted to the Auckland Hospital yesterday. They were all members of the one household and none is in a serious condition.
A boy belonging to the same family was taken to the hospital with paratyphoid on Saturday. There was no reason for alarm, said the medical officer of health (Dr L. S. Davis) last night.
Paratyphoid was a rare and mild form of typhoid usually contracted in the same way as food poisoning. It developed quickly, and recovery was usually very rapidly. It, was probable that the four patients admitted to the hospital yesterday were suffering from paratyphoid, but it would not be known for certain for a day or two yet.
The boy who had gone to. hospital earlier had a more severe attack. Two other patients had been reported from totally different areas recently.
“It would appear that these cases are entirely isolated,” added Dr Davis.
A few cases were reported from time to time. Instances of suspected food poisoning at the present time should not be treated lightly, and a doctor should be called.
